Happy Tails Tales
From Betsy's Cocker Place |
|
|
 |
Hello All!
Well, Betsy had a great idea for a page on our
Web Site to update you all on some of the dogs
we have been able to help, and let you know just
where your donations go, and what a difference
they make to these dogs.
So, here we go with some Before and After, Happy
Tails Tales!
And remember to tell all of your friends looking
to add a dog into their families that our
shelters and rescues are full of wonderful dogs,
just needing that chance for someone to take
them home and call them theirs. Believe us, they
appreciate it, and give unconditional love in
return. |

Woofs and Wags of
Thanks from Captain ResQ
A great big thank you to all from
CaptainResQ, for all of your generous donations
to his fundraiser. CaptainResQ now has his
evaluation scheduled for May 30, and at that
time his cataract surgery will be scheduled
shortly thereafter.
Captain ResQ was one of the unfortunate dogs to
be caught in the horror story of the WA breeder
with twenty-plus cockers in deplorable
condition. He now has a wonderful forever home
with Kat R.

Moses/Now Hootie
Moses--now Hootie--(because he is such a hoot!)
is an adorable, sweet, wiggly, adult male,
chubby, purebred, 2-3 year old buff Cocker
Spaniel. The ACO said he picked the little guy
up tied outside a grooming facility and thinks
he was intentionally abandoned there. He was
held by Vernon Animal Control for the statutory
period and came to us.
He was adopted into his forever home by Suzanne
and Frank M where he is living happily with his
sister, Emmy.
Again, thanks to all for making this possible,
including the delightful Ms. Emmy for welcoming
her new brother! |
|
Lucky
Lucky is a sweet black and white parti boy, who
was a "bit" overweight, at 44 lbs. He was
adopted from a shelter when he was around a year
old and had lived happily with his mom and dad
for nearly ten years.
His mom passed away recently, and unfortunately,
his dad was in very poor health and could no
longer care for Lucky. Lucky had been their
beloved "fur child" since they had no children
of their own.
A wonderful Connecticut family adopted Lucky,
having lost their own elder cocker several
months before.
Thanks to our wonderful adopters willing to give
an "old timer" a new home, Lucky is indeed one
Lucky fellow! Thanks Lynn and Michael for your
huge, huge hearts! |
 |
|
 |
Benjamin
Benjamin came to us as a stray picked up by
Animal Control at the Hartford Pound. He had
been hanging around a hardware store, where kind
people fed him and called Animal Control.
And boy was he a mess! He was so matted the
Animal Control Officer could not tell if he was
neutered or not! And his smell!!
It took quite a few baths, but we finally got
him looking like the beautiful boy he is, and
had his curled under long toenails clipped,
after which his limping stopped within a day.
He has had his cherry eye repair surgery,
recovered well, and is now living the good life
in Connecticut with his new forever family.
Again, thanks to all who give homes to these
"second hand" sweethearts.

Snoop/Now Cody
Snoop came to us from NYCACC and the Mayor's
Alliance for Animals.
He was hit by a car in Manhattan, had a
broken pelvis and spinal cord entanglement.
The Mayor's Alliance paid for his surgery
and contacted us about finding a forever
home for Snoop when he was ready to leave
the hospital.
Thanks to the wonderful, loving care he
received from his foster mom, Diane S.Snoop/now Cody has healed beautifully, and
has been adopted into his forever home. |
 |
|
 |
Sugar/Now
Mindy
Sugar is an absolutely delightful, happy,
butt-wagging petite cocker girl who as a
stray, found herself at NYCACC, frightened
and flea invested. She was held for the ten
day period, and pulled by us.
She was adopted into her forever home by
Diane S where she is living happily with her
cocker sister, Molly.
Again, thanks to all for making this
possible, including the Diane S. and the
delightful Ms. Molly for welcoming her new
Sister! |
|
Shadow
Shadow is a friendly, happy, butt-wagging,
slightly chubby black cocker spaniel
gentleman, owner turn in, no reason given,
from NYCACC. Once we saw the horrible
condition of his ears, we knew why he was
turned in after years of neglect.
Shadow had surgeries performed on each of
his ears on April 17, 2007, and had a dental
cleaning and neutering at the same time. He
has recovered well after this difficult
surgery.
Shadow is one happy fellow! Everyone at the
groomer and hospital, and his foster mom,
just fell in love with him. As we are
getting to know him better, we find he loves
everyone, including children and other dogs
and cats.
Shadow has been adopted into his forever
home.
Thanks to Diane S for her loving foster care
of this wonderful boy through his difficult
surgeries. |

 |
Charlie
Charlie is another of the WA State dogs who
were rescued from deplorable conditions at
the home of a breeder. Same breeder as
CaptainResQ.
And boy was he a mess! It took the vet
assistants hours to shave off the pounds of
feces and filth from his poor little body.
To see more of his grooming pictures, go to
Charlie, one of the WA dogs, being groomed.
He has been adopted by and lovingly cared
for by Audrey S, and wow, just look at him
now!
Thanks to all for your donations making this
possible for Charlie and the other WA dogs,
and thank you Audrey S for giving this
lovely boy a happy forever home, where he is
quite obviously thriving!

|
Happy
Meet Happy. She was at stray taken in at
NYCACC in Staten Island, just hours from the
euth room. There was no room, and she was so
so frightened she just hid in the back her
cage, shaking.
We took her in, found her to be a
delightfully happy dog who loved everyone,
especially children, and she has been
adopted by a lovely family in Connecticut
where she has two little skin brothers who
adore her. Our updates from the family are
that she is indeed Happy, and has made the
entire family happy, and kept the boys busy
with her constant antics and endless ball
playing!
Thanks to all for your donations making this
possible for Happy, and thank you Cheryl and
Adam W, their children Brandon and Josh for
giving this lovely girl a happy forever
home.

Freeway--Now known as Brady
Meet Freeway, now know as Brady. This fellow was found
wondering on the highway in Brattleboro, Vermont, about an
inch away from being run over.
Thanks to the lady who took him in and called us, Freeway
was picked up, vetted, micro-chipped and put up for
adoption.
He was adopted by a lovely family in Connecticut with a
rescued boxer, Abbey, and as you see, they are the best of
friends.
Thanks to all for your donations making it possible, and
thank you Sarah and Robert for giving not one but two rescue
dogs a happy forever home.

Faith
Another sad story of a blind deaf dog put out in the
streets of New York City. She was on the verge of
starvation.
But
NY Abandoned Angels pulled Faith from the
shelter, and sent her up to us in New Hampshire for
fostering.
Faith healed and was adopted into her forever home
by a loving family, who absolutely adore her.
Sadly, Faith has passed on to the Bridge, after
having the most wonderful year of her life.
|
|
J-Lo
This girl, who was totally blind, was in a shelter
in the Northeast, not only blind but suffering from
bladder stones. We pulled her to foster, and both
Toolie and her husband (and four other cockers) fell
in love with this sweet little girl and had her join
their pack in New Hampshire as a forever home.
Ms. J-Lo was a candidate for cataract surgery and
sight restoration. She had her surgery at Tufts in
January, and now sees!! Thanks to all who
participated in our raffle to restore this girl's
sight. |

Marcy/Now Janis
Twice she was featured in The Gleaner's "Take us
home" column for adoptable shelter pets - the day
before Halloween and again on Christmas Day 2005, in
Henderson, KY.
But nobody from Henderson wanted to adopt the older
blind cocker spaniel that had been abandoned at the
animal shelter there in the middle of the night.
Perhaps it was fate. Or maybe just the power of the
Internet. A friend of BCP was pulling another dog
from that shelter, and told us about this blind girl
who was going to be put down that day. We told her
to pull her and we would arrange transport to us.
Susan H pulled her and treated her kennel cough. Her
flight from Evansville to Manchester, NH., was
arranged by us once her kennel cough was cured.
We took her for an evaluation by an ophthalmologist,
who said her condition is known as progressive
retinal atrophy. "She must have gone blind over a
period of time, which explains her comfort level.
This condition is not reversible," the doctor said.
Her first shelter name was Shadow, then is was
Marcy. These days she answers to Janis, named by
Toolie's husband, who said she had stolen "a little
piece of his heart."
Janis is now living a doggone comfy life in a
forever home located inside a New Hampshire state
park with Ruth Q. of Allenstown, NH.
Her new family had never had a blind dog before, but
when they saw an online photo of Janis, Ruth
couldn't put the dog out of her mind.
"Here was this picture of Jannie and I said to
myself, 'She is just beautiful.' Then I saw she was
blind and I went, 'Wow, what a life,'" Ruth said.
"There was something about her ... just something
about her that just drew me to her picture.
"I went through a bunch of cockers and went back to
her. Toolie said she knew we were meant to be
together," Ruth added.
Her husband had his own reasons for wanting to find
the right match for Ruth.
After their 14-year-old dog Dustin, a buff cocker,
died in April of this year, Jim wanted Ruth to have
another pet to help her get through anticipated
tough times ahead. The couple, who have been
together for almost 27 years, found out last fall
that Jim has terminal pancreatic cancer.
"When I'm gone, I don't want her to be alone," Jim
said of Ruth, adding that his remaining time is "all
in the hands of the Lord."
The match between Ruth and Janis has been made in
heaven. "Jim was glad to see I have bonded so well
with Jannie because we don't know how long he has
and he wants me to have someone when he's gone,"
Ruth said.
Janis appears to be perfect for the job. "She's very
laid-back and very loving. She's easy-going and not
demanding," Ruth said. "She has a gentle all-around
personality and so easy to take care of."
And Janis apparently loves her new home.
"She made this her home and her territory," Jim
said. "She's made it perfectly clear that she's
found her forever home. She came in the door and has
never left."
Thanks to everyone who donated to Janis' flight and
care, she is bringing joy into this couple's life
everyday.

Jasmine
Jasmine was adopted from
Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Maine by her family.
Her ears were beyond horrible, she was in terrible
constant pain, and needed total ear ablations in
both ears.
Thanks to your support and donations, we were able
to help pay for the surgery.
Jasmine is now happy and pain free. |

Carley
Hi everyone, my name is Carley.
I am nine years old and lived most of my life in a
crate. I had lots and lots of babies. That was
getting really old and I decided I didn't like it
anymore. When I became a 'bad Mom' I was turned over
to rescue.
Now it's my turn. I have recently been spayed so I
don't have to worry about any more pesky kids and a
mammary tumor was removed. We were happy to hear
that it was benign so I don't have to worry about
treatments.
Did I mention I am blind? There is good news and bad
news about that. The bad news is my right eye has
glaucoma and needs to be removed. It doesn't hurt
much now that I have drops put in daily but the nice
eye doctor said it will only get worse.
Unfortunately, Carley was not a candidate for eye
surgery.
Carley has been placed in her forever home, and she
is happy!! Thanks to all who helped.

Motley/Now Deacon
The owner of this lovely fellow had to move and give
him up. We feared that he was being used as a stud
dog because of his rare Merle coloring.
Thanks to the folks at Our Cocker Club and Gina M.,
he was picked up, vetted and neutered and sent to
member Maureen H. to join her and her cocker, Tynan,
as a permanent home. He is adored by Maureen
and brother Tynan.
Thanks to all who donated to make this possible. |
 |
|
 |
Sierra
Sierra was pulled from a shelter by Sarah D. She was
blind and suffering from high pressure in her eyes,
which made eye removal necessary.
Sierra came through her surgery with flying colors,
and is now a happy, happy girl, with her own forever
home.
Thanks to all who participated in our raffle and
donated funds which made this surgery possible. |

Star
Meet Star--she is a lovely young cocker spaniel who
lives with her family, including two young children
who adore her, in New Hampshire.
Star's family did everything right--they researched
breeders and waited for the right cocker spaniel to
come along. Once Star came home to live with them,
her family took out pet insurance, knowing if
something were ever to happen to Star, they wanted
to make sure she would have the best of veterinary
care, with lack of funds never being a reason for
Star not to receive veterinary care or to have to be
turned over to rescue to receive this care.
Star and her family were a perfect fit. She has a
beautiful temperament, and her "skin kid" siblings
adore her. Life was very happy.
Then, suddenly Star started limping. Her family took
her to the vet who diagnosed Level 3 luxating
patellas, requiring surgery at the cost of over
$1,800.00.
Star's family contacted the insurance company, who
denied coverage for the surgery because they felt
Star's luxating patellas were a genetic condition.
Star's family had obtained several veterinary
opinions on her condition, and all have stated they
she absolutely needs the surgery.
Thanks to your donations for Star, we were able to
assist Star's family and she has had her surgery,
has totally recovered and is doing well and is one
healthy, happy dog. |

Victor
We spotted this sweet fellow, who was tied to the
fence of Animal Control in Stamford, Connecticut and
abandoned.
Both Toolie and Jane got together to pick up
"Victor" and meet halfway between Connecticut and
New Hampshire where Toolie picked up "Victor" took
him to the vet where he was pronounced healthy.
Toolie thinks Victor was a City dog since he prefers
to "take care of business" on cement. While
fostering, Toolie's children compared him to a City
"Sunshine Kid" spending a summer away in the
country.
But for this sweet fellow, life is now good, and he
now has a wonderful forever home on the shores of
Lake Champlain, Vermont, with a great lab brother. |
|
Zoe
Zoe was adopted from a shelter by Sarah D, one of
our volunteers. Several years later, Sarah D gave
birth to a new child with extreme allergies to dogs,
and Zoe had to be rehomed.
Zoe fostered with Jane G in Maine, and has now been
placed into her forever home |

Jasper
While we don't have a picture of Jasper, he is a
beautiful buff boy who ended up in a kill shelter
with the label of a biter, who was going to be put
down in a few hours.
We had personal knowledge of this dog and just did
not believe he was a biter. We went out on a limb.
We arranged to have him pulled from the shelter in
West Virginia and boarded and evaluated in a local
training/boarding kennel, pending the results of the
evaluation and arrangements for foster care.
Jasper not only passed his evaluation with flying
colors, but he was such a sweet, friendly wiggle
butt that the boarding facility asked if we would be
interested in their helping with his placement,
since they had several families interested in
adopting him.
After the appropriate reference checking, vetting
and neutering, Jasper was placed in a loving home
with a brother cocker and two human brothers, where
he is thriving.
Thanks all for your donations and support! |

Josie
This girl was found wandering the streets of
Hartford, CT, by Animal Control and taken to the
Hartford pound. Thanks to the efforts of the rescue
community working together, she was placed with
Linda W for fostering.
Josie was a mess, extremely underweight, and nearly
hairless. Her uterus was protruding from her body.
After loving care and support in her foster home,
Josie has recovered and now has been adopted into
her forever home, where she is thriving.
We have been told that she enjoys being on the "jet
ski" with her new Dad and are anxiously awaiting
pictures. |

The Dixie Chicks
Cockers In Need (Linda Ackerman) took in some of
these girls.
In Linda's words: "In July, a back yard breeder
started to dump her dogs in a South Carolina
Shelter. We were notified they would need help, as
she was bringing in 15 of them. She sent 5 in at a
time. The shelter was overwhelmed and asked several
Cocker Rescues to help out. We understand she had 45
dogs, mostly cockers, with a few shih tzu & poodles
tossed in.
The dogs all lived in muck. They had some really
dilapidated dog houses, that were mostly covered in
mud and poop.
What we think she did was just breed these dogs
almost to death, to make puppies, and never giving
the breeding dogs any healthcare. We understand
several are blind. All these animals were treated
like livestock and not a family pet. Just another
money grubbing back yard breeder with no ethics at
all. Luckily, each one is sweet and just craving to
be loved.
After a few weeks of figuring out transport, and
arrangements made with the rescues, we finally got
several of them up here (PA., NY)."
Please see Linda's site
Cockers In Need for an update on these girls.
Thanks to your donations and support, we were able
to assist Linda financially with caring for these
girls.

The Missouri Mill Boys
Cockers in Need (Linda Ackerman) took in 3 male
cockers from a puppy mill close down.
Per Linda: "The two brothers have a really bad case
of sarcoptic mange. The brown & white parti boy
doesn't seem to have it.
"The brothers are missing most of the fur on their
ears, legs and their bellys are raw. They have scabs
on their paws and back. It's extremely itchy and
smelly. They've been started on Ivomec for treatment
of mange. They are also very skinny and look like
they have giant heads right now. The skin is black
from scratching and from a secondary infection. Once
their coat grows in, it will be a beautiful color
with black tips on their ears and in some of their
back fur.
"The brown & white boy is a decent weight and seems
to be ok so far. They just arrived after a very long
trip.
"They will have their first Christmas in a home.
We'll give them a nice soothing bath to help the
irritation from the mites and remove all the dirt
and stench from their frail little bodies. We can't
neuter them until they're a little bit stronger and
healthier."
Thanks to your generous donations and support, we
were able to help
Cockers in Need financially with these boys. |

Carson
Carson was taken in by
Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin, needing
bilateral ear ablation surgery on both horrible
ears. Carson's intake date was January 26, 2005. He
was surrendered by his family to Town Lake Animal
Center (Austin, TX City Shelter -- it IS a kill
shelter) citing cost of care as the reason for
surrender.
We held a raffle to help raise funds for
Carson--thanks to all of your help, both Betsy's
Cocker Place and
CARA Cocker Angel Rescue Fund were able to
assist Austin Cocker Rescue and make this surgery a
reality.
Great news! One surgery was performed, and because
of the wonderful care Carson was given by his foster
mom, his second ear does not require surgery!!
He has now found his forever home with new mom
Danielle, and is now named "Manhattan" to match his
sibling cocker, "Martini."

Abbey, Formerly Miss Piggy
"Miss Piggy" was a cocker in New Orleans who lost
her family to Hurricane Katrina. She was saved by
rescue workers and taken to the Pets with People
Shelter, where our member Terri D. was volunteering.
We featured a picture of "Miss Piggy" in our
Newsletter asking for donations and participation in
our raffle for the Pets with People Shelter to help
the Katrina Dogs.
One of our supporters, Vickie N., saw her picture
and wrote the following to us:
"HI BETSY OUR HEARTS HAVE GONE OUT TO MISS PIGGY AND
WE WOULD LOVE TO MAKE HER A PART OF OUR FAMILY, WILL
THE RESCUE PERSON THERE DO A OUT OF STATE ADOPTION
WE LIVE IN CHATTANOOGA TN. HOW WOULD THE
TRANSPORTATION BE HANDLED. I CAN GIVE REFERENCES,
AND THE NAME OF OUR VET. SHE WILL BE LOVED AND WELL
TAKEN CARE OF. WE DON'T MIND AN IN HOME INSPECTION
IT WOULD BE WELCOME."
After appropriate reference checking and vetting,
Vickie drove half way from Tennessee, and Terri half
way from Alexandria, LA, and Miss Piggy arrived in
Tennessee, was renamed Abbey and joined Vicki and
her new family for her forever home.
Latest updates on Abbey:
She is doing well, happy in her new home, and is no
longer "looking" for her family everytime she sees
strangers. She knows she is "home" and loved.
Thanks to all for your help in making this happen.

Trooper
Trooper was involved in a car accident and suffered
a severe degloving to his left rear leg, dislocated
in two places and he needed reconstruction of the
ligaments in his lower left leg and a procedure that
removed the head of his femur in that leg.
A good Samaritan brought him to the Town Lake Animal
Center where they rushed him to the emergency
veterinary clinic.
Trooper was taken in by
Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin from the City
Shelter.
On top of those immediate needs, Trooper is also
heartworm positive and has
cherry eye in both eyes.
CARA Cocker Angel
Rescue Fund has covered the costs of Trooper's
surgery, and Betsy's Cocker Place has been able to
contribute to his aftercare and heartworm treatment.
Update 11-9-05: Trooper had surgery on Thursday and
is doing well. His cherry eyes were also repaired at
that time. Special thanks go to Dr. Lewis and Mandie
at Animal Trustees of Austin and to CARA Cocker
Angel Rescue Fund for providing a grant to pay for
Troopers surgery!
Update 11/25/05: Dr. Lewis took off Troopers splint
today...Yay!! But he has to wear the e-collar
again...Boo!! Oh well, he is doing well and will
visit Dr. Lewis again on Friday so he can check his
progress.
Thanks for all of your support which enabled us to
help Trooper.

Bailey was removed from his family for neglect, and
taken to the
Meridan Humane Society. He was one of the
sweetest dogs we ever encountered. We helped supply
Bailey with a fresh raw diet and supplements to
strengthen him for his needed ear surgery. A
wonderful supporter of the shelter donated the funds
for his surgery.
Bailey came through his surgery
with flying colors, and has since been adopted into
a happy forever home. |

Buster Brown
Buster Brown was picked up as a very matted stray by
Animal Control in Cromwell, CT. His coat was so
matted that they did realize he had a harness on
until they got down far enough in their shaving of
his mats to find it, tangled in his coat. It took
over 3 hours to groom him and that didn't include
the bath time.
Thank you Zena H for lovingly fostering this boy,
and thank you Barbara K for giving him a wonderful
forever home. |
 |
 |
Jane
We pulled Jane from NYCACC with hair falling out and
skin falling off, and had her transported to the vet

skin condition.
After many weeks in the hospital and treatment, Jane
is now well and living in her forever home.
Thank you Lynn D for giving this girl a wonderful
home.
